The Stainless Steel Rat (1961) by Harry Harrison introduced the world to his picaresque hero, James Bolivar DiGriz, alias “Slippery Jim”, thief, spy and pacifist. 

Jim and his contemporaries speek the constructed language Esperanto (as do the characters in his Deathworld series (1960 onwards))
